Welcome to Our Church
Loving God & Loving Others
History
Believing in God’s Word and Spirit
Today’s Gethsemane United Methodist Church was brought about by the merging of two historic congregations, Ridgley-Zion Methodist Church and Seat Pleasant Methodist Church. The Ridgley branch of this great union is the older of the two congregations. In 1871, Lewis Ridgley, Joseph Beall, and Richard Cook purchased one-half acre of land at a cost of $20.00. Soon after the purchase, a small church was built on the land at 8900 Central Avenue, Landover, Maryland.
Mission
Transforming Ourselves, Transforming the World
Gethsemane United Methodist Church’s mission is to be transformed and to transform our local and global community into a more just, inclusive, and supportive place. We seek to achieve this through word, worship, and service; building interfaith partnerships; and advocating for policies, systems, and environmental changes that help people to live healthy and whole lives.
Values
Serving God by Serving our Neighbors
We vision to grow into the wisdom and knowledge of God to serve as living testaments to God’s grace. As people of faith, we use our faith to transform our world into a beloved community that replicates God’s love on the earth, positioning Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves is crucial to our collective health and survival.
Beliefs
Molding believers, influencing the world
There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form t is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English.
